OCR Level 2 National Certificate in Travel & Tourism

Who is the course for?

This high quality course, equivalent to 4 x GCSEs A*-C, is designed to prepare you for either employment in travel and tourism or for further study on our level 3 course. It will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in travel and tourism activities. You will be able to carry out a range of tasks relevant to travel and tourism employers

Are there any pre-requisites?

In order to meet the demands of the course, candidates must have one of the following:

  • 4 x GCSE passes at Grade D or above including English and Maths
  • An appropriate level 1 qualification at merit or distinction level
  • Relevant experience
  • A valid passport would be useful but not essential  
  • All applicants must also possess a high level of literacy and numeracy (at least to level 1 standard). An Initial Assessment will be undertaken during the application process to assess literacy and numeracy levels.

    What will i learn?

    You will study units in:
  • Exploring travel and tourism,  which will look at the development of the travel and tourism industries
  • Dealing with customers in travel and tourism, which will teach you how to provide a high standard of customer care within a travel and tourism environment. 
  • Investigating tourist destinations, in which you will gain knowledge of the location of key UK, short and long haul destinations and their features
  • Promoting travel and tourism, which will explain the use and importance of promotion in the travel and tourism industries. 
  • Planning and running a travel and tourism event, when you will plan and run a travel and tourism event, gaining knowledge, understanding and practical skills required to do so successfully

Work experience in travel and tourism, where you will gain practical experience during a weekend conference in Blackpool

How is the course structured?

Full time (up to 4 days per week) for one year, over 2 semesters. All 3 core units studied in semester 1 must be completed to minimum pass standard by our inter-semester week in February to continue on the course until the end of the academic year in June. 

Portfolio, tutorial, workshop and enrichment sessions also form part of your timetable, to provide academic and pastoral support throughout the year.

All units are internally assessed so you do not need to sit exams. Assessment and grading of each unit is done by the subject tutor and follows strict guidelines from OCR. Between 4 and 6 small assessments in the following formats may be required per unit;

  • Role play 
  • Written report or essay 
  • Presentation - Individual or group 
  • Exhibition or displays 
  • Video production 
  • Log book
  •  Practical assessment 
  • Investigative study / Project 
  • Oral report (viva voce) 
  • Multiple choice test

 Educational Visits

A number of educational visits will be arranged to assist you in completing your coursework, as well as experiencing industry procedures and practices. Failure to attend organised trips may affect your achievement.
Students under 18 must have a consent form signed by their parent or guardian
 

A deposit of £30 per student must be paid in advance, when you enrol. This will be held by the college and put towards the cost of your trips. Every eligible student must apply to our Learning Support Fund, for help towards the costs of the trips. 

 

You are required to ensure you have a valid passport and/or visa for overseas trips.

 

When is the next course?

10 September 2007, at the college’s Charlton Athletic FC Campus (until around December 2007) and the college’s Eltham Centre (from around January 2008.)
