OCR Level 1 National first award, national award and national certificate in leisure and tourism

Who is the course for?

This course will introduce you to the knowledge, understanding and skills required to prepare for work in leisure and tourism. You will develop personal skills important to employers such as team working, career planning, communication and problem solving.  

Are there any pre-requisites?

  •  In order to meet the demands of the course, all applicants must have one of the following;
  • Literacy skills to Entry Level 3 (scoring above 60%) or Level 1
  • ESOL skills to Entry Level 3 (post 2004. Pre-2004 ESOL candidates will need to achieve literacy levels shown above)
  • Relevant experience
  • A valid passport would be useful but not essential 
  • Candidates must attend an interview and demonstrate a committed and service focused attitude
  • An Initial Assessment will be undertaken during the application process to assess literacy and numeracy levels. 

What will i learn?

 To achieve the Level 1 National First Award in term 1, you will study units in
  •  Working as a team in leisure and tourism, where you will gain the knowledge, understanding and skills to help you work as part of a team in leisure and tourism settings. 
  • Investigating leisure and tourism provision, where you will develop knowledge and understanding about the provision of leisure and tourism products and services. 
  • Introducing skills for working in leisure and tourism, where you will look at the workplace environment within key areas of the leisure and tourism industry. 
  •  Investigating options for work in leisure and tourism, where you will find out about different employment opportunities in the leisure and tourism sector. 

To achieve the Level 1National Awardin term 2, you will study units in;

  • Communication skills in leisure and tourism, where you will demonstrate knowledge, understanding and skills to help you communicate effectively in leisure and tourism settings.
  • Promotion for travel and tourism, where you will look at promotion and the techniques and materials used. 
  • Transport for tourism, where you will develop knowledge and understanding of the main UK transport systems used by UK and overseas visitors. 
  • Looking after customers in travel and tourism, where you will understand the provision of customer service in key areas of the travel and tourism sector. 
To achieve the Level 1National Certificatein term 3, you will study units in
  • Problem solving in leisure and tourism, where you will gain practical problem solving skills in leisure and tourism settings. 
  • Hospitality in travel and tourism, where you will be introduced to the hospitality sector in travel and tourism.
  • Travel sales, where you will develop knowledge and understanding of travel information sources as well as basic skills in finding appropriate travel information for customers. 
  • UK visitor destinations, where you will learn about major UK destinations for British and overseas visitors

    How is the course structured?

    Full time (up to 4 days per week) for one year, over 3 x 11 week terms. Each term will contain 4 different core subjects.Portfolio, tutorial, workshop and enrichment sessions also form part of your timetable, to provide academic and pastoral support throughout the year.All units are internally assessed so you do not need to sit exams. Assessment and grading of each unit is done by the subject tutor and follows strict guidelines from OCR. Between 3 and 4 small assessments must be completed per unit and these may include:
  • Written report or essay 
  • Role play
  • Presentation - Individual or group
  • Exhibition or displays
  • Video production
  • Log book
  • Practical assessment
  • Investigative study / Project
  • Oral report (viva voce)
  • Multiple choice test

 Educational Visits

A number of educational visits will be arranged to assist you in completing your coursework, as well as experiencing real life travel and tourism companies. If you do not attend organised trips, you might find that you achieve a lower mark for your coursework.
Students under 18 must have a consent form signed by their parent or guardian
 
A deposit of £30 per student must be paid in advance, when you enrol. This will be held by the college and put towards the cost of your trips. Every eligible student must apply to our Learning Support Fund, for help towards the costs of the trips. 
You are required to ensure you have a valid passport and/or visa for overseas trips.

When is the next course?

10 September 2007, at the college’s Charlton Athletic FC Campus (until around December 2007) and the college’s Eltham Centre (from around January 2008.)
