btec nationals in sport & exercise science: Award/Certificate/Diploma

Who is the course for?

The Award, Certificate and Diploma are one year courses designed to equip learners with the knowledge, understanding, practical skills and expertise required to succeed in employment in the Sport & Recreation Industry. It also provides an entry route to higher education (depending on study duration).

Are there any pre-requisites?

  • Five GCSE passes at grade C or above including Maths, English and Science or,
  • An appropriate Intermediate GNVQ with the majority of units at distinction level or,
  • A BTEC First in Sport (dependent on the relevance if units covered) at Merit Level or above
  • A good level of literacy and numeracy is essential

Reference from previous college/school may be requested

  • Anatomy for Sport & Exercise
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Sport & Psychology
  • Skill Acquisition
  • Nutrition for Sport
  • Sports Injuries
  • Technological Developments in Sport
  • Sport Massage
  • Fitness Testing
  • Principles of Performance
  • Coaching

 

Students will also take a National Skills award and have the option to take additional GSCEs as well as relevant Sport and Leisure Industry qualifications.

How is the course structured?

BTEC National Award (Year 1) - 6 units

BTEC National Certificate (Year 2) - 6 units

BTEC National Diploma (Year 3) - 6 units

 

The course may  be completed through 2 different routes. Students may either complete 1, 2, or 3 years of the course - achieving an Award (Year 1), a Certificate (Year 2) or the full Diploma (Year 3).

 

The other option is to complete the full Diploma in 2 years. Through this route the student will complete 9 units in each year. (This route will not be accessible to students on the Sports Talent Scheme)

When is the next course?

10 September 2007, at the college’s Charlton Athletic FC Campus (until around December 2007) and the college’s Eltham Centre (from around January 2008.)
